New Delhi, August 8: India has assigned new names to 27 places in Arunachal Pradesh, according to the supplied report, amid continued differences with China over the state’s geographical identity.
The newly identified places appear on Survey of India maps of Arunachal Pradesh. The move follows China’s earlier attempts to assign its own names to locations in the state.
Indian authorities have maintained that Arunachal Pradesh forms an integral part of India. India has also rejected China’s claims over the northeastern state.
New names include areas near disputed frontier
The newly listed locations include Long Xu, an area near the Line of Actual Control. The region has historical significance in India China border tensions.
A village identified as Maja near Long Xu also appears on the new map. Maja falls within Upper Subansiri district.
The list includes several mountain ranges and locations. These include Jo La, Riza La, Pukur La and Bisa village.
Thag La, a high altitude pass, also features in the updated identification. Indian and Chinese forces clashed in the area in 1962 during the India China war.
Jairampur in Changlang district also appears among the newly identified places.
Other names listed in the report include Sambo Sarovar, Bara Kundan and Chota Kundan. Dhan Bari, Prithnagar, Teritnagar and Ramnagar also feature on the list.
The list further includes Jaswantgarh, Sagar, Padma, Jyothinagar and Baisaki. Sher e Thappa Memorial, Chota Rupak and Bara Rupak also appear among the names.
Shivaji Nagar, Sunpura, Kamalang Nagar and Kamalang Sanctuary are also included. Buddha Mandir completes the list of locations mentioned in the report.
China refers to Arunachal Pradesh as “Zhongnan” in its official claims and has previously issued Chinese names for locations there.
India has consistently opposed such naming exercises. New Delhi has said that assigning names does not alter the status of places within Indian territory.
The latest move adds another layer to the long running India China dispute over Arunachal Pradesh and the wider border.
