Delhi/Hyderabad, Sept 13 (Maxim News): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday welcomed leaders of the expanded BRICS grouping as they arrived at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi for the second day of the 18th BRICS Summit.
United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Ghanaian President John Mahama, Burundi President Evariste Ndayishimiye, Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung, Kazakhstan President Kassym Jomart Tokayev, Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud were among the leaders who arrived at the venue.
Leaders from BRICS member countries and outreach nations are scheduled to participate in an open session focusing on this year’s theme, “Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability: Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth.”
The leaders are expected to deliberate on areas of mutual interest and discuss ways to strengthen cooperation across various sectors among BRICS member countries and partner nations.
New Delhi Declaration strengthens BRICS cooperation
On Saturday, BRICS countries adopted the New Delhi Declaration, which commended India for hosting the Outreach and BRICS Plus Dialogue segment of the summit.
The declaration said India’s chairship had provided “new impetus” to strengthening international cooperation and solidarity.
The BRICS leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the group’s principles, including mutual respect, sovereign equality, solidarity, openness, inclusiveness, collaboration and consensus.
The member countries also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation within the expanded BRICS under three broad pillars: political and security cooperation, economic and financial cooperation, and cultural and people to people cooperation.
The declaration further stressed the promotion of peace, a more representative and fairer international order, a reformed multilateral system, sustainable development and inclusive growth.
The adoption of a joint statement on the first day of the summit was described as a significant diplomatic development, given the differing geopolitical positions of several BRICS members.
On Saturday evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted a gala dinner for BRICS leaders and representatives of participating nations at Bharat Mandapam.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, Kazakhstan President Kassym Jomart Tokayev, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el Sisi and World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus were among the dignitaries who attended.
A specially curated vegan gala dinner was organised to showcase India’s culinary diversity while highlighting sustainability and inclusivity.
The evening also featured a cultural performance titled “Navarasa — The Universe of Shared Emotions.”
Another highlight was the BRICS Symphony, “One Rhythm, Many Cultures,” which brought together musicians from BRICS member and partner countries for a collaborative performance. (Maxim News)
