Ujjain: Tension continued in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain on Monday after protests erupted over the removal of a portion of the Shahi Masjid for a road-widening project linked to preparations for Simhastha 2028.
A heavy police presence was deployed across the city after clashes were reported between protesters and security personnel. Police used tear gas to disperse a crowd after stones were allegedly thrown at personnel near the mosque.
The dispute centres on a section of the Shahi Masjid that falls within the proposed alignment of a road being widened to 15 metres. The project covers a stretch connecting Kanthal Chauraha and the Gopal Mandir area.
Heavy Security Deployed Amid Ujjain Tensions
The administration had held discussions with mosque representatives and community leaders over the proposed removal. Officials said the affected portion was being removed voluntarily by members of the community as part of an understanding reached overnight.
However, tensions resurfaced on Monday morning when groups gathered near the site. Police subsequently used tear gas and mild force to disperse the crowd, according to officials.
Around 2,500 police and Rapid Action Force personnel have been deployed in Ujjain to maintain law and order, particularly in sensitive areas. Authorities have also been identifying people allegedly involved in stone-pelting and the unrest using CCTV and drone footage.
Police have registered cases against several people in connection with the disturbance. Reports also said some social media influencers were booked over allegations of spreading misinformation and disturbing public order.
District officials have maintained that the road-widening exercise is being carried out without discrimination. Collector Raushan Kumar said houses, shops and places of worship falling within the road alignment were being removed by members of the respective communities.
The wider project is part of Ujjain’s preparations for Simhastha 2028, which is expected to bring a large influx of pilgrims and visitors to the city. The administration has cited traffic movement and public convenience as reasons for improving road infrastructure.
The Madhya Pradesh High Court had earlier dismissed petitions challenging the municipal action concerning the affected portion of the Shahi Masjid, allowing the road-widening process to proceed.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has also offered part of his ancestral house for removal because it falls within the road alignment. He personally began removing the affected portion, saying the development exercise should apply to properties without distinction.
Authorities have appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid rumours as security forces continue to monitor the situation.
