Vijaya said the Election Commission of India (ECI) had informed the High Court that it would not issue a by-election notification for Khairatabad until the pending election petition was decided.

She added that she was not concerned about the statements being made by Danam Nagender on the issue.

In January 2024, Vijaya Reddy filed an election petition challenging Nagender’s victory.

She alleged that his election affidavit did not fully disclose the assets of his wife and dependents. She also alleged that money was distributed to influence voters. These allegations remain part of the pending election case.

Separately, the Telangana High Court disqualified Nagender as an MLA under the anti-defection law after he contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election as a Congress candidate.

The Supreme Court later upheld the disqualification. The Assembly subsequently declared the Khairatabad seat vacant.

Following the disqualification, Vijaya Reddy approached the High Court seeking to prevent the ECI from issuing a by-election notification until her election petition receives a final decision.

During the hearing on October 1, the ECI told the court it would not notify the by-election until the petition was resolved.

The High Court directed the Commission to submit an affidavit confirming its position and scheduled the next hearing for October 6.

The future of the Khairatabad by-election therefore depends on further legal proceedings. The allegations in Vijaya Reddy’s election petition have not yet been finally adjudicated. (Maxim News)
