Guwahati / Hyderabad, Oct 6 (Maxim News) : Harmanpreet Kaur resigned as India women’s cricket captain across all formats on Monday, ending her tenure at the helm following a BCCI review meeting in Guwahati.
The meeting was presided over by BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia and was attended by Harmanpreet, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and head coach Amol Muzumdar.
The review was called on the back of growing pressure for Harmanpreet’s removal as captain. The agenda of the meeting, it is learnt, centred on her future as captain and the future of coach Amol Muzumdar.
Hours after the meeting concluded, Harmanpreet announced her resignation from the captaincy across all formats.
Calls for her removal began after India failed to qualify for the knockouts at the Women’s T20 World Cup in England earlier this year.

The team subsequently won two back-to-back titles — the Women’s Asia Cup in the UAE and a gold medal at the Asian Games in Japan — but the results were not enough to secure her position.

Former India captain Diana Edulji, who had been among those demanding Harmanpreet’s resignation, welcomed the decision.
“It is a good decision she has taken in the interest of the future of women’s cricket, by giving enough time to the new captain and the team to gel under her captaincy,” Edulji told to scribes.
She added that Harmanpreet still has a few years left in cricket and wished her well for the remainder of her career.
The development marks the end of a significant chapter in Indian women’s cricket.
Harmanpreet had led India through some of their most competitive years internationally. The BCCI is now expected to announce her successor as captain across formats. (Maxim News)
