Hyderabad Luxury Homebuyers | Hyderabad, Oct. 24: Homebuyers should assess wastewater management systems alongside luxury amenities when purchasing villas and apartments, experts said at a sanitation panel discussion in Hyderabad. They stressed that functional wastewater treatment is essential for water conservation, environmental protection and public health.
The discussion, titled “Sanitation: A Super Vaccine”, was organised by the Rotary Club of One Hyderabad (RC1H) at The Leela, Banjara Hills, last week.
Girish Mallpani, Chairman and Managing Director of MPM Group, urged prospective buyers to ask builders about the capacity, functioning and maintenance of wastewater treatment plants before investing in residential properties.
He said premium projects increasingly feature swimming pools, landscaped gardens, spas, clubhouses and other water-intensive amenities. Without effective wastewater management, these facilities could increase pressure on freshwater resources and urban sewage infrastructure.

Mallpani emphasised that installing a wastewater treatment plant alone was not sufficient. Developers must ensure that the system has adequate capacity, operates effectively and receives regular maintenance.
He also called on Residents Welfare Associations (RWAs) to ensure wastewater is treated before discharge or reuse, in accordance with applicable standards.

Vivek Pandey, a WASH professional and consultant to the Gates Foundation, advocated treating wastewater as close as possible to where it is generated.
Pandey explained that conventional sanitation systems often use large volumes of water to transport waste over long distances. Decentralised treatment systems can help reduce freshwater demand and pressure on sewer networks when properly designed and maintained.
Citing the ReFlow model toilet at Lumbini Park in Hyderabad, he highlighted an approach that treats wastewater on-site and reuses recovered water. He said practical and scalable solutions could make water reuse an integral part of sustainable urban development.
Builders and Residents Urged to Prioritise Water Conservation
The panel highlighted wastewater management as a core responsibility for developers, homebuyers and residential communities.
Experts urged buyers to check a project’s wastewater treatment capacity, maintenance arrangements and plans for reusing or safely discharging treated water. Builders were encouraged to design infrastructure that meets project requirements and remains functional over the long term.

RWAs were also advised to prioritise the continued operation and maintenance of treatment plants after residents take possession of their homes.
The discussion called for collaboration among developers, residents, technology providers and public authorities to promote responsible water use and sustainable housing.
The programme was moderated by Prof. V. Srinivas Chary, former Director of the Administrative Staff College of India and advisor to T-Works, Dasra and the Gates Foundation, along with Abhishek Nath, founder of LooCafe and ReFlow.
Other participants included Dr. T. K. Sridevi, Secretary of Telangana’s Municipal Administration Department; Dr. Zelalem Birhanu Tafesse, UNICEF India’s Chief of Field Office; Rohit Chandragiri of the British Deputy High Commission; and Col. M. Chandan Kumar, Head of Engineering at T-Works. Rotary District 3150 Governor Uday Pilani also addressed the gathering.
The programme aligns with RC1H’s focus on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) as a priority area during its first two years.
