Vishakapatnam/Hyderabad, Oct 25 (Maxim News): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that a depression over the Bay of Bengal could intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm. The system is likely to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam on October 28.
According to the IMD bulletin issued on Sunday morning, the depression was centred over the east-central and adjoining south-east Bay of Bengal. It lay about 880 km east-southeast of Visakhapatnam and 980 km east-southeast of Kakinada.
The system moved southeastwards at around 5 kmph during the preceding six hours. It is expected to move southwards initially before turning west-northwestwards.
The weather department forecasts gradual intensification over the coming days. The system could become a deep depression on October 25 and a cyclonic storm by October 26.
It may strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm around October 27. The IMD expects further intensification before the system approaches the Andhra Pradesh coast.
The storm could cross the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam by the forenoon of October 28. Forecast maximum sustained winds are 115–125 kmph, with gusts reaching 140 kmph.
Chandrababu Naidu Orders High Alert Across Coastal Andhra
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to remain on high alert and strengthen preparations.
He reviewed the situation with Chief Secretary Sai Prasad and officials from the Real-Time Governance Society (RTGS). Officials briefed him on the developing weather system and the possibility of heavy rainfall across coastal districts.
The Chief Minister instructed authorities to issue advance warnings and keep the administrative machinery ready. He also directed officials to prevent fishermen from venturing into the sea as conditions deteriorate.
Naidu asked district administrations to alert residents in low-lying and vulnerable areas. He also ordered officials to arrange toll-free helplines for emergency assistance and public information.
The IMD forecast indicates the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in coastal Andhra Pradesh on October 27 and 28. Isolated areas could receive extremely heavy rainfall.
The developing system could also affect neighbouring regions, including Odisha and Telangana. Authorities are monitoring the forecast and may update warnings as the system intensifies.
Residents in potentially affected areas should follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather. Fishermen should strictly follow restrictions issued by the authorities.
The cyclone’s exact track and intensity may change as the system develops. Residents should rely on updates from the IMD and state disaster management authorities.
