Hyderabad, Oct. 27: Diwali celebrations brought Indian culture, music and cuisine to New York City’s iconic Times Square on October 27. Thousands of people from the Indian and South Asian diaspora gathered to celebrate the festival of lights through cultural performances, traditional rituals and food.
The day-long festivities featured a Diwali Bazaar, traditional lamp lighting, a virtual Diwali countdown on the One Times Square Ball Drop Tower and the Light Up Times Square Concert. American rapper Raja Kumari and popular singer Kanika Kapoor entertained audiences with their musical performances.
Diwali at Times Square Promotes Indian Culture and Unity
India’s Consul General in New York, Binay Pradhan, and Shibu Nair, representing the New York Governor’s Asian American Affairs office, attended the celebrations.

Event organiser Nita Bhasin, a member of the New York State AAPI Commission, said the event aimed to spread Diwali’s message of peace, harmony and unity from one of the world’s most recognised public spaces.
Organisers said the annual ‘Diwali at Times Square’ celebrations began in 2013 to introduce international audiences to Indian traditions and the country’s cultural diversity.
Meanwhile, The Pierre, a Taj Hotel in New York, organised a special Diwali dining experience titled ‘Culinary Journey Through India’. In collaboration with restaurants Chatti, Junoon and Musaafer, the programme showcased regional Indian flavours to international visitors and Indian-Americans.
