Applicants seeking permission to drill a borewell must submit the prescribed application form in person at their local Mandal Revenue Office. The application should include registered sale deeds, the applicant’s Aadhaar card and address proof, a map showing property boundaries, existing structures and nearby borewells, along with clearance from the local civic body, either GHMC or the concerned municipal council.

MRO Permission for Borewells Near Public Water Sources

After receiving an application, the MRO will direct a field inspection team to verify the proposed site. Under the prescribed rules, a new borewell must be located at least 250 metres away from any existing public or neighbouring drinking water source to prevent depletion of groundwater reserves.

A hydrogeologist will also inspect the site to assess whether drilling could cause geological stress or affect the local water table. If the proposed borewell meets the required distance, ecological and structural conditions, the designated authority will issue formal permission under the WALTA regulations.

A Ground Water Department (GWD) official said new borewells are permitted only for essential drinking water requirements, subject to strict scrutiny and applicable distance regulations.

The official also said restrictions were in place on borewell drilling. Construction sites must obtain recycled treated wastewater through designated HMWSSB Green Water Tankers instead of using fresh drinking water sources.
