Delhi Shop Closures | New Delhi, Nov. 2: Around 2.5 lakh shops across nearly 25 major markets in Delhi remained closed on Sunday due to traffic restrictions and congestion linked to the INDIA Alliance public meeting at Ramlila Maidan, traders said.
The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) estimated that the closures affected business worth approximately Rs.11,000 crore. The headline estimate of the loss was also put at around Rs.10,000 crore.
CTI Chairman Brijesh Goyal said nearly 80 per cent of shops in areas surrounding Ramlila Maidan remained closed. He said traffic restrictions and congestion disrupted the movement of customers, suppliers and dealers, affecting normal business activity.
Delhi Shop Closures Disrupt Trade and Transport
Goyal said around four lakh small traders who usually travel to Delhi for business could not reach the city. Loading and unloading operations also came to a standstill, further affecting commercial activity.
Traders said the disruption affected several major markets across Delhi. They attributed the closures and business losses to difficulties in accessing market areas during the public meeting.
