Diwali 2026 | Hyderabad, Nov. 4: Ophthalmologists have urged people to take precautions against firecracker related eye injuries ahead of Diwali celebrations.
Dr Navya Cherukuri, an ophthalmologist at LVPEI’s Kallam Anji Reddy campus in Hyderabad, warned that firecrackers can cause injuries ranging from mild irritation to permanent vision loss.
She said injuries may include corneal damage, bleeding inside the eye, traumatic cataracts and retinal damage.
Doctors advised people to buy fireworks only from authorised manufacturers. They also recommended drying crackers in sunlight for two days before use.
Furthermore, people should store firecrackers in cardboard boxes, away from children and flammable materials such as gas cylinders and oil cans. Adults should closely supervise children while they use fireworks.
