New Delhi, Nov. 5: Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan said India’s renewable energy progress offers a model for countries across the Global South. He made the remarks at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 in Delhi on Thursday.
He said India’s non-fossil fuel installed capacity had crossed 300 GW. The country also achieved 50 per cent of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil sources in 2025, five years ahead of its target.
Solar power capacity has grown from less than 3 GW to more than 170 GW over the past decade. Radhakrishnan said solar energy has also become one of India’s cheapest electricity sources.
Solar Schemes Expand Clean Energy Access
The Vice-President said more than 65 lakh households had joined the solar movement under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. He also noted that nearly 30 lakh farmers had benefited from the PM-KUSUM scheme.
Solar pumps help farmers reduce diesel costs and earn additional income, he said. He added that PM-JANMAN and the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan were expanding electricity access in remote tribal areas.

Radhakrishnan said electricity access improves education, healthcare, communication and livelihoods. He stressed that energy solutions must address the needs of cities, villages and remote communities.
He also expressed confidence in the future of hydrogen energy. He said scientific advances could make the technology more affordable.
The Vice-President credited policy support, private enterprise and public participation for India’s renewable energy growth. He said environmental commitments could support economic growth, create jobs and reduce dependence on energy imports.
He also called for stronger collaboration between industry and academic institutions. Highlighting the role of research and innovation, he said technologies for 2040 would emerge from today’s laboratories and startups.
Radhakrishnan described the renewable energy transition as a people’s movement. He urged teachers, students, entrepreneurs and citizens to participate actively.
