‘Don’t buy from Muslim vendors’ notice appears in Gujarat Village

Ahmedabad: In a village in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district, an alleged gramme panchayat notification bearing the name of the Sarpanch instructing shopkeepers and residents not to buy anything from Muslim vendors is making the rounds.

According to the notification, anyone caught buying goods from Muslim vendors will be fined Rs 5,100, with the money going toward ‘Gaushalas.’

According to the letter dated June 30, the rule was implemented in response to the heinous murder of a tailor in Udaipur on June 18.

The letter bears a stamp as well as the Sarpanch’s’signature.’ Five members signed the letter, including one in Gujarati, Patel Jethabhai.

When the Sarpanch, Patel Mafiben Virabhai, was contacted, her husband Virabhai Patel answered the phone and stated, “My wife is no longer a Sarpanch since November.”

“I also serve on the village administration… That letter was not written by any of us. We’re trying to figure out who wrote it, signed it, and stamped it. In our village, there is no Patel Jethabhai. Someone is attempting to tarnish our reputation.”

In response to the notification, Congress MLA Gulabsinh Rajput of Banaskantha’s Tharad constituency said, “India is a democratic country, and no one can issue such a ‘farman.'” This is an abuse of authority and designation.”
