Hyderabad Heritage | Hyderabad, May 12 (Maxim News) : Mohammad Ali Baig will take Hyderabad’s heritage to the global stage through his debut feature film Chand Tara at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.
The film’s international trailer will premiere at Cannes on May 18. The event marks a proud moment for Hyderabad and Indian cinema.
The film celebrates Hyderabad’s Deccani culture and Qutub Shahi history. It highlights the city’s poetry, music, architecture and royal traditions.
Padma Shri awardee Mohammad Ali Baig has spent decades promoting Hyderabad’s heritage through theatre and storytelling. He called the Cannes selection a proud recognition for Hyderabadi culture.
Baig said the project reflects the artistic richness of the Deccan. He added that Hyderabad’s heritage deserves global recognition.
Hyderabad Heritage | ‘Chand Tara’ Revives Qutub Shahi Era
The film tells the story of Sultan Abdullah Qutub Shah and legendary singer dancer Taramati. It recreates the elegance and artistic beauty of the Qutub Shahi period.

Veteran actor Anupam Kher has given the opening narration. The narration introduces audiences to historic Hyderabad through the banks of the Musi River.
The film also stars Mohan Agashe, Ranjana Srivastava and Rashmi Seth.
Mohammad Ali Baig plays Sultan Abdullah Qutub Shah in the film.
The makers carried out detailed research for the project. They carefully recreated costumes, palace interiors, music, ragas and dance traditions from the Qutub Shahi era.
Baig said the team wanted global audiences to experience Hyderabad’s true cultural spirit.
The music comes from Karthik Ilaiyaraaja. Singers Lucky Ali and Vasundhara Das have sung songs for the film.
One major highlight at Cannes will be “Piya Baaj Piyala.” Sultan Quli Qutub Shah originally wrote the composition. The presentation of Qutub Shahi poetry at Cannes carries cultural importance for Hyderabad.
Telangana Tourism and Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority supported the project. The film also reflects Telangana’s efforts to promote Hyderabad’s heritage worldwide.
The Cannes selection also holds special value for Hyderabad’s theatre community. Many artists see it as recognition for years of work to preserve Deccani culture through theatre and cinema.
As Chand Tara heads to Cannes, Hyderabad’s poetry, music and history will reach audiences across the world.
