Free screening of ‘Gandhi’ begins in theatres across Telangana

The 1982 Oscar-winning film “Gandhi” has been shown for free in 552 theatres throughout Telangana as of Tuesday. From August 9 through August 22, the Telugu and Hindi versions of the film will be shown daily from 10 a.m. to 1.15 p.m. Ben Kingsley plays the title character in the movie “Gandhi,” which will be shown without charge thanks to complex arrangements made by the state administration. 22 lakh schoolchildren are anticipated to see the film in theatres, according to officials.

Arvind Kumar, the special chief secretary for urban development, and Somesh Kumar, the chief secretary, attended the film screening on an opening day at a theatre in Attapur, Hyderabad. “Gandhi,” a biographical film directed by Richard Attenborough, follows Mahatma Gandhi from 1893 to 1948 as he participated in the liberation fight.

The film, a joint effort between India and the UK, debuted on November 30, 1982, in India. At the 55th Academy Awards, it earned 11 nominations and won eight of them, including best film, best director, and best actor (for Kingsley).

The screening of “Gandhi” is a component of the Telangana government’s two-week-long “Swatantra Bharatha Vajrotsava Dwi Sapthaham” celebrations honoring India’s 75th anniversary of independence. At a festive ceremony held at the Hyderabad International Convention Center (HICC), Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao hoisted the national flag on Monday to kick off the festivities.

In his statement on the occasion, he urged the audience to denounce attempts to damage Mahatma Gandhi’s reputation as a world leader and combat the nefarious plots being developed to split India. He claimed that attempts were being made to divide the country along communal lines in order to gain political advantage.

No country will ever try to paint a negative picture of its own history. Unfortunately, we are witnessing incidents in our nation that aim to degrade and damage the reputation of a world-famous leader like Mahatma Gandhi. Everyone should denounce this horrible trend, according to CM KCR.
