PM Narendra Modi Launches 5G Services In India

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 5G services in India today. The service is expected to progressively cover the entire country over the next couple of years.

The cumulative economic impact of 5G on India is estimated to reach $450 billion by 2035.

Capable of supporting ultra-high-speed internet, the fifth generation or 5G service is expected to unleash new economic opportunities and societal benefits, serving as a transformational force for Indian society.

The three major telecom operators of the country demonstrated one use case each in front of the Prime Minister to show the potential of 5G technology in India.

Here are the LIVE updates on the 5G Service Launch In India:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched the 5G telephony services that promise to provide ultra high-speed internet on mobile phones, saying it marks the beginning of a new era and presents a sea of opportunities.

While the nation was dependent on foreign countries for technology for 2G, 3G, and 4G telecom services, India has created history with 5G, he said.

The Prime Minister said his government’s vision for ‘Digital India’ was founded on four pillars — the cost of devices, digital connectivity, data cost, and the digital-first approach.

5G can offer peak download speeds of 20 Gb/s (gigabits per second), or 20,480 Mb/s (megabits per second). To put it in perspective, a 20Gb/s internet speed can provide download speeds of 2.5 GB/s (gigabytes per second), or 2,560 MB/s (megabytes per second).

With those numbers, a 1 GB-sized file can be downloaded in 0.03 seconds.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today test-drove a car in Europe remotely from New Delhi, to mark the launch of 5G telecommunication services in India. The Prime Minister launched the latest telecom service as he attended the opening of India Mobile Congress 2022.

Using 5G technology, Mr. Modi drove the car at the Ericsson booth at India Mobile Conference, while the vehicle was located in Sweden. 5G technology helped connect the car’s controls placed in India with the vehicle in Sweden.

The launch of 5G is a gift from the telecom industry to 130 crore Indians. It is a step toward a new era in the country and is the beginning of infinite opportunities.

Bharti Airtel is launching 5G telecom services in eight cities, including four metros, on Saturday and will progressively cover the entire country by March 2024, its chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal said. Mukesh Ambani promises 5G across India by Dec 2023

Mukesh Ambani on Saturday announced that his telecom firm Reliance Jio will launch 5G services across the country by December 2023.

The three major telecom operators of the country demonstrated one use case each in front of the Prime Minister to show the potential of 5G technology in India.

Experts have said that 5G technology will greatly benefit India. It is likely to benefit the Indian economy by ₹ 36.4 trillion ($455 billion) between 2023 and 2040, a recent report by a global industry body representing mobile network operators estimated.

The report also estimated which sectors will realize how much benefit of 5G technology — the manufacturing sector (representing 20 percent of the total benefit), retail (12 percent), and agriculture (11 percent). India Mobile Congress (IMC), which claims to be the largest telecom, media, and technology forum in Asia, is jointly organized by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).

5G will account for more than a third of total connections in India by 2030, with the share of 2G and 3G dwindling to less than 10 percent, the GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications) report said, noting that India’s high level of 4G adoption (79 percent) indicates a subscriber base ready to transition to 5G.

GMR group-run Delhi Airport today said it has made its facility compliant with the 5G network, which the passengers can avail of once these services are rolled out by the Telecom Service Providers (TSPs).

Most airports at present provide wireless service primarily through Wi-Fi to passengers.

Wi-Fi relies on the unlicensed spectrum which is free for anyone to use, as per the Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL).

The government has given a target of 80 percent coverage of 5G telecom services in the country in the short timeframe, Union Minister for Communications, Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnav said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch 5G services in India today in select cities. The service is expected to progressively cover the entire country over the next couple of years.
