Munugodu bypoll: HC dismisses TRS petition to remove symbols similar to car

Hyderabad, Oct.18 (NSS): The State High Court on Tuesday dismissed the petition filed by the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) seeking a direction to the Election Commission (EC) to remove symbols similar to the TRS’s car in the by-election for the Munugodu Assembly constituency.

The High Court pointed out that it could not interfere in the electoral process once an election was notified.

The ruling TRS party has approached the High Court seeking the deletion of eight symbols which look like similarly its official symbol of car after the Election Commission of India (ECI) failed to respond on the memorandum submitted by the TRS leaders.

The ruling party has mentioned in the petition stating that the car has been an official symbol of the TRS for the last two decades and it has fought many elections. However, the opposition parties are indulging in dubious methods to damage the prospects of TRS in the elections.

In this process, they are taking the advantage of Identical symbols, including camera, chapati roller, dolli, road roller, soap dish, television, sewing machine and ship which are available in the list of free symbols to confuse the voters in choosing and recognising TRS symbol car on the EVM machines.

The TRS stated few candidates are conspiring to damage the winning prospects of the party and added that some identical symbols have the potential in causing confusion among the TRS supported voters and are causing the diversion of votes to the so-called independents.(NSS)
