A Mistake That Cost BJP Goshamahal MLA T Raja Singh His Gaddi
Hyderabad, July 12 (Maxim News): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) called the bluff of Goshamahal MLA T. Raja Singh by accepting his resignation, effectively leaving him politically stranded and his supporters in confusion.
On June 30, Raja Singh, a prominent Hindutva firebrand, submitted his resignation to the then BJP Telangana President G. Kishan Reddy. Eleven days later, BJP National General Secretary Arun Singh wrote back, officially accepting the resignation.
Raja Singh, visibly upset, had stepped down on the same day the BJP appointed N. Ramachandra Rao as the new Telangana State President. Singh claimed he was the ideal candidate to lead the party in the state, but his claim was ignored and Rao got the position.
On June 30, Raja Singh and his supporters reportedly approached BJP leader Abhay Patel, and got a green signal to file his nomination. As per nomination rules, a candidate needs backing from at least eight council members — but Raja Singh managed support from only three. He was therefore disqualified, which triggered his rebellion and resignation.
Sources suggest Raja Singh may have been misguided by close aides who told him that resigning from the party wouldn’t affect his MLA seat. However, under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution (anti-defection law), any MLA who voluntarily gives up party membership is automatically disqualified.
If the BJP formally notifies the Telangana Speaker, Raja Singh will lose his Assembly seat, and a by-election for Goshamahal will be called.
Party insiders also noted that the BJP was irritated by Singh’s repeated threats to quit and his alleged plan to contest from Maharashtra. A senior leader said the BJP was firm in not yielding to blackmail tactics and accepted his resignation without reconsideration.
Singh had reportedly tried to revoke his resignation by reaching out to the central leadership in Delhi, but the party leadership chose to move on. (Maxim News)
