Air India CEO Search Begins Amid Performance Concerns
Hyderabad, Jan 5: Air India has reportedly begun the process to find a new chief executive officer amid dissatisfaction with the performance of current CEO Campbell Wilson.
Media reports suggest that Tata Sons, the parent company of Air India, is considering replacing Wilson sooner than planned.
Tata Group chairman N Chandrasekaran is said to have held discussions with senior executives from the aviation sector in recent weeks.
According to sources, the group expects faster growth and stronger operational performance from Air India.
However, the airline’s current results are reportedly below expectations. As a result, talks on a leadership change have gained momentum.
Discussions are also underway regarding a possible CEO change at Air India Express. Reports indicate that Alok Singh is being considered for the top role at the low cost carrier.
Campbell Wilson’s current tenure as Air India CEO is scheduled to end in June 2027. The company has not issued any official statement on the reported leadership review.
Background to the Air India CEO search
Campbell Wilson took charge as Air India CEO in July 2022 after Tata Sons regained control of the airline.
He was tasked with turning the carrier into a globally competitive and financially stable airline.
Under his leadership, Vistara was merged into Air India. The airline also expanded operations on major domestic and international routes. However, aircraft supply delays affected fleet expansion plans.
In June last year, a major aircraft incident in Ahmedabad led to heightened scrutiny of operations. Regulators flagged issues related to maintenance checks, engine part replacements, documentation, and crew management.
The aviation regulator DGCA issued notices to senior officials over compliance lapses. These developments have intensified internal reviews, prompting the Air India CEO search, sources said.
