All urban bodies asked to take up segregation of wet & dry garbage like GHMC

Hyderabad: On the eve of World Environment Day on June 5, the Swachh Bharath Mission directed all the local urban bodies in the country to take up segregation of wet and dry garbage waste separately. The GHMC has already taken up segregation of wet and dry garbage waste in almost all the circles of GHMC duly involving Swachh resources persons, colony welfare associations and opening dry resources centres in some of the circles for the segregation purpose.

The GHMC has already taken up this initiative well in advance by distributing 44 lakhs dust bins to the households in the entire GHMC limits taking up awareness campaigns to know the benefits of segregation of dry and waste right from the households involving several sanitation field workers, self help groups and various associations with which the GHMC is in a position to ensure 100% segregation by June 2. One of its kind, the Rajendranagar circle has taken up the scheme and came out successfully where the garbage segregation has been taken up since a few days where around 97,452 kg of dry waste has been segregated and Rajendranagar Circle has got a revenue of Rs. 5,47,149 from selling of dry waste.
The dry waste segregation taken up in Rajendranagar and Uppal Circles could achieve only because of 100% door to door garbage collection involving Swachh Resource Persons, Residential Welfare Associations and NGOs for the said purpose. The GHMC is the first Municipal Corporation is the first Urban Local Body in the country which established dry resource centres in some of the circles like Rajendranagar, Ramanthapur in Uppal circle and deriving good results with regard to segregation.

The GHMC was planning to establish 50 dry resource centres in almost all the circles of the GHMC where 10,000 households covering for each dry resource centre. These centres are being established in the central location of the ward so that it is easily accessible to the waste collectors to cater the households and planning to entrust the same to the management to self-help groups/entrepreneurs to take up the responsibility.

VITAL STATISTICS: Rajendrnagar circle is geographically existing in southern part of the Hyderabad city. The Mir Alam tank, National Fisheries Development Board and Prof. Jayashankar Argriculture University are within Rajendrangar Circle with 52 Sq.km Area. Total population is 2,29,987 as per 2011 census. There are 70,403 households and 595 sanitation workers generate 205 metric tonnes garbage.
Workers handle dry waste at Rajendranagar before it is sold to ITC. The wet waste buried in an open plot for vermic compost. There are different plots. One compost takes about 20 days while another 30 days.

Residents are wel-come to purchase the ver-mic compose at kilogram rate as it . a good plant manure. It has been over two months since the whole process of garbage disposed in Rajendranagar has been changed into Vermi composting is a process using earthworms to convert organic waste into organic manure. Rajendranagar has become the first division in Greater Hyderabad to have 100 per cent waste segregation, GHMC Zonal Commissioner Srinivas Reddy explained. He said they have increased the door-to-door garbage collection by distributing twin bins to households and supplied Swachh auto tippers.
