- Rs 1.5 lakh hospital charge sparks debate on US healthcare
The high cost of healthcare in the United States has again come under focus after a hospital bill shocked many on social media. The case involves an Indian man who spent just an hour and a half in a hospital but later received a bill of $1,800, which is about Rs 1.5 lakh. The incident, reported on January 24 by Maxim News from New York Internet Hyderabad, has gone viral and triggered widespread discussion on American medical costs.
According to the input, the incident happened on Christmas Eve in New York City. The man was ice skating with his wife and sister when he seriously injured his knee. He feared it might be a broken bone. However, he avoided calling an ambulance because of the cost. Instead, he took a taxi to the hospital emergency room while in pain. There, doctors kept him for about one and a half hours. During this time, they took an X ray, examined his knee, and applied a simple bandage. Later, they sent him home.
Initially, the man felt relieved after the treatment. However, three weeks later, he received the total hospital bill. The amount shocked him. The bill came to about $6,54 dollars, or around Rs 5.3 lakhs. His insurance company paid nearly $4,500. Even then, he had to pay $1,800, or about Rs 1.5 lakhs, from his own pocket. Therefore, the short hospital visit turned into a heavy financial burden.
Meanwhile, the video of the bill spread quickly on social media. Netizens compared American medical costs with other countries. Many said the same treatment in India would cost between Rs 1,000 and Rs 3,000. Others pointed out that in Canada, medical treatment is free and there is no tension over hospital bills. Some users commented that Americans turn even a small injury into a big financial injury and questioned who the system protects.
The man later said that high salaries in America exist because of such high living and medical costs. This incident again showed that every country has its pluses and minuses in healthcare. However, in America, medical care remains a major burden even for insured people.
