Andaman Earthquake: Strong Tremors Shake Islands

  • Magnitude 5.4 earthquake hits Andaman and Nicobar Islands
  • National Centre for Seismology and German agency record different intensities

A major earthquake struck the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Sunday afternoon, causing strong tremors across the region. The National Centre for Seismology reported that the earthquake measured 5.4 on the Richter scale and occurred at a depth of 90 km below the ground. The tremors were felt across parts of the island group, though there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Meanwhile, the German Research Centre for Geosciences recorded a slightly higher intensity. It reported that the earthquake’s magnitude was 6.07 and located its epicenter at a depth of 10 km beneath the surface. These differing measurements are not unusual in seismology, as agencies often use different instruments and methods to record earthquake data.

Officials said the precise impact of the quake on local infrastructure and population is yet to be determined. However, early assessments indicate that no major loss of life or property has been reported so far. Residents in some parts of the islands described feeling a strong, brief shake that lasted only a few seconds.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are located in a seismically active zone where the Indian and Burmese tectonic plates meet. This region is known for frequent seismic activity, though most quakes are moderate in nature. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates if new information emerges.

Seismic experts advised residents to remain alert and follow safety guidelines issued by local disaster management authorities. They also emphasized that with an earthquake of moderate magnitude, aftershocks could occur in the following hours or days.
