AP Guv pays tributes to Potti Sriramulu on State Formation Day

Vijayawada, Nov.1 (NSS): Andhra Pradesh Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan paid rich tributes to Amarajeevi Potti Sriramulu by offering flowers to his portrait, on the occasion of Andhra Pradesh Formation Day, at a program held in Durbar Hall in Raj Bhavan on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor Harichandan said several leaders from Andhra region were at the forefront of the country’s freedom movement and played a decisive role in the fight against the British. He said the demand of people of Andhra region for a separate State on linguistic basis became intense after the supreme sacrifice made by Amarajeevi Potti Sriramulu, who breathed his last on December 15, 1952, after undertaking fast unto death for 56 days. A separate State for Telugu-speaking people became a reality with the announcement made by the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, on December 19, 1952, on the formation of Andhra State, the first State to be constituted in the country on linguistic basis, after independence, said the Governor.
