Arrangements for MLC Vote Counting Completed: How Long Will It Take to Declare Results?
Hyderabad, March 2 (Maxim News): The arrangements for the counting of votes for the Telangana MLC elections have been completed. Elections were held for three seats—two for teachers’ constituencies and one for a graduate constituency. The counting of votes is scheduled for Monday.
Unlike general elections, where the candidate with the highest number of votes is declared the winner, the graduate MLC elections follow a different process. To win, a candidate must secure more than 50% of the valid votes.
Vote Counting Process
- Quota Determination: The first step in counting is determining the quota. Invalid votes are removed, and only valid votes are considered. A candidate must secure at least one vote more than 50% of the valid votes to be declared the winner.
- Vote Distribution: Each contesting candidate is assigned a box, where the votes they receive are placed and counted. For instance, if 2,000 votes are cast and 1,800 are valid, the winning candidate must secure at least 901 votes.
- Elimination Process: If no candidate meets the required quota after the first round of counting, the elimination process begins. The candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and their second-preference votes are transferred to the remaining candidates. This process continues until a candidate reaches the required quota.
How Long Will It Take?
The time required to complete the counting varies. Since graduate MLC votes are in the lakhs, the process is expected to take longer. In contrast, the counting for teacher constituency votes, which are only in the thousands, is expected to conclude much faster. (Maxim News)
