Hyderabad, March 28: Asha workers staged a protest demanding a minimum wage of Rs 18,000, as promised in the Congress party manifesto. The agitation intensified during the call for Chalo Hyderabad, with police taking action across the state. Authorities arrested several workers as they attempted to press their demands during the Assembly budget sessions.
The protest turned tense when Asha workers organized a dharna and tried to blockade the Assembly. They insisted that the government fulfill its promise of fixing a monthly wage of Rs 18,000. However, police intervened and attempted to disperse the gathering, which led to a confrontation.
Police action during Asha workers protest
During the scuffle, several Asha workers suffered injuries. The situation worsened at RTC Cross Road, where one Asha worker lost her life amid the clash with police. Protesters alleged that the police showed excessive force despite their peaceful intentions.
Asha workers expressed strong anger over the arrests and the handling of the protest. They said they were not making unreasonable demands but asking for a wage already mentioned in the manifesto of the Congress government and Chief Minister Revanth Reddy.
They also voiced frustration over their working conditions. “They want us for every small job.. Then why are they not recognizing us?” the workers said. They further added, “They expressed their grief that we are not even getting goods with next month’s salary.”
The workers also criticized the police action during the protest. “Today, even though we took permission for the dharna, they are arresting us like dogs,” they said, strongly opposing what they described as atrocities by the Congress government.
Meanwhile, the agitation reflects growing unrest among Asha workers. They continue to demand recognition and fair wages, while opposing the arrests made during their protest near the Assembly.
