​​RBI’s Role & Reference for Bank Holidays

The RBI publishes a holiday calendar each year indicating when all banks must remain closed, including public, private, cooperative, rural and local area banks. These holidays include national, gazetted, festival and regional holidays. (RBI’s official holiday notifications are the primary source for branch closures.)

Every month, RBI mandates closure on:

All Sundays

Second and fourth Saturdays

These are common non-working days for banks nationwide under RBI guidelines.

Bank Holidays in October 2025: RBI Holiday List

In addition, RBI recognises gazetted holidays (applicable across many or all states) and regional festival holidays (applicable in specific states) according to their holiday calendar.

Key Bank Holidays in October 2025 (RBI Calendar Highlights)

October 1: Banks will be closed in Agartala, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Gangtok, Guwahati, Itanagar, Kanpur, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kohima, Kolkata, Lucknow, Patna, Ranchi and Shillong on the occasion of Maharnavami and Durga Puja.

October 2: Banks in Telugu states will be closed on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra.

October 3: Banks will be closed in Gangtok on the occasion of Durga Puja.

October 5: Banks will be closed across the country on Sunday.

October 6: Banks in Agartala and Kolkata will be closed
on the occasion of Lakshmi Puja.

October 7: Banks in Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh and Shimla on the occasion of Valmiki Jayanti and Kumar Purnima.

October 10: Banks in Shimla will be closed on the occasion of Karva Chauth.

October 11: Banks will be closed on the occasion of the second Saturday.

October 12: Banks will be closed on the occasion of Sunday.

October 18: Banks will be closed in Guwahati on the occasion of Kati Bihu. October 19:
Holiday as it is a Sunday.

October 20: Banks will be closed in many cities including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata, New Delhi, Lucknow, Chennai on the occasion of Diwali, Naraka Chaturdashi, and Kali Puja.

October 21: Banks will be closed in AP and Telangana as well as Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Gangtok, Imphal, Jammu, Mumbai, Nagpur, and Srinagar on the occasion of Diwali and Govardhan Puja.

October 22: Banks will be closed in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Dehradun, Gangtok, Mumbai, Patna and other places on account of Diwali, Vikram New Year, Balipadami and Lakshmi Puja.

October 23: Banks will be closed in Ahmedabad, Gangtok, Imphal, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow and Shimla on account of Bhai Dooj, Bhatri Dwitiya, Chitragupta Jayanti and Lakshmi Puja.

October 25: Banks will be closed on account of Fourth Saturday .

October 26: Banks will be closed across the country on account of Sunday.

October 27: Banks will be closed in Kolkata, Patna and Ranchi on account of Chhath Puja.

October 28: Banks in Kolkata, Patna, and Ranchi will be closed on the occasion of Chathu Puja.

October 31: Banks in Ahmedabad will be closed on the occasion of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary.
