Hyderabad, Jan. 29 (Maxim News): Telangana Jagruthi president and former MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha on Thursday alleged that the BJP led central government was misleading the nation on the issue of caste census.

Addressing a round table meeting on caste census in the national population census, Kavitha said the proposed census document continued the old format by listing only SC and ST categories, while placing OBCs and other castes under a broad others column.

Therefore, she said, this approach would cause serious injustice to sub castes within communities.

She stated that India’s caste structure was complex, as the same community fell under different categories in different states.

Hence, she questioned how clarity could emerge for the OBC community, which constituted nearly 56 percent of the population.

Caste census needs clarity and transparency

Kavitha said that after coming to power, the BJP introduced EWS certificates for economically weaker sections among upper castes.

However, she argued that the caste column alone could not clearly identify where such groups would be classified.

She alleged that the census document prepared by the central government was deliberately confusing.

Meanwhile, she said discussions were taking place across the country on caste census, and Telangana should formally convey its views to the Centre.

Kavitha announced that Telangana Jagruthi would collect detailed data on castes and sub castes in the state and submit it to the central government. She also sought support from all sections for this initiative.

She said the Congress led state government should ideally undertake this exercise, but had failed to do so. She further stated that political parties played a crucial role on the issue, yet parties like BRS and Congress had not clearly stated their stand on the census document.

Therefore, she demanded that all parties clarify their position on caste census. (Maxim News)
