Delhi/Hyderabad, Aug 15: The BJP has criticized the Congress after senior leaders were seen interacting during Vande Mataram at its Independence Day event.
BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi accused the Congress leadership of disrespecting the national song and demanded an apology.
The incident took place during the 80th Independence Day celebrations at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi.
A video showed Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Sonia Gandhi speaking while Vande Mataram was being played.
Congress Denies Attempt To Stop Vande Mataram
Trivedi said the incident was particularly significant as Vande Mataram was sung in its complete form during the celebration.
He recalled the song’s historical association with the first Constituent Assembly meeting on August 14, 1947.
The BJP leader said the Congress should apologise and clarify the conduct of its senior leaders.
He also questioned the party’s commitment to the freedom struggle and national symbols.
Meanwhile, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh rejected the allegation that anyone tried to stop the song.
Ramesh said Kharge had been standing for a long time and Sonia Gandhi had asked for a chair for him.
The Congress explanation came after the video triggered criticism from BJP leaders.
