- Opposition MPs accused of disrupting President’s Address debate
The BJP women MPs have written a formal letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, seeking action against opposition MPs over an incident linked to the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address. The move has added to the ongoing controversy in the Lok Sabha following protests that took place earlier this month.
According to the provided input, the issue dates back to February 4, when opposition women MPs staged a protest at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s seat in the Lok Sabha. Due to the protest, the Prime Minister was unable to speak on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address on that day. Since then, the matter has continued to trigger sharp reactions inside the House.
Meanwhile, on Monday, BJP women MPs addressed a letter to Speaker Om Birla. In the letter, they requested him to take action against the opposition MPs involved in the protest. This development came after opposition MPs had earlier written a similar letter to the Speaker, alleging that they were being unfairly accused in the matter.
In their communication, the BJP women MPs demanded that strict action be taken against the opposition MPs as per the rules of the House. They accused the opposition members of disrespecting the democratic process. The letter also praised Speaker Birla for the way he conducted the discussion on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address. The BJP MPs stated that he maintained the dignity and decorum of the House during the proceedings.
They further stated that the entire country watched what they described as an unfortunate scene in the Lok Sabha chamber. According to the allegations mentioned in the letter, opposition MPs rushed into the House well during the protest. They also allegedly attempted to climb onto the Speaker’s table. The letter claimed that papers were torn and thrown towards the Speaker during the disturbance.
The BJP women MPs also alleged that some women members behaved in an unruly manner and moved towards the benches where ministers were seated. They claimed that banners and placards were carried during the protest. The letter further alleged that opposition MPs seized the Prime Minister’s seat and also occupied the treasury benches where senior ministers were seated.
Later, the BJP women MPs reiterated their demand for action under the rules, stating that such incidents harm parliamentary traditions. The controversy, however, continues to unfold in the Lok Sabha, with both sides maintaining their stand.
