Census 2027 to collect 40 categories of information
The Census 2027 questionnaire will collect a person’s name, sex, date of birth and age. It will also record marital status, age at marriage and spouse details.
Moreover, enumerators will collect nationality, religion and disability information. The questionnaire includes details on Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and caste.
The census will also record parents’ particulars, mother tongue and other languages known. It will assess literacy and digital literacy status.
Education details will form another part of the exercise. Officials will collect information about attendance at educational institutions, highest educational qualification and the chosen stream or discipline.
Employment details will also receive attention. Enumerators will ask whether a person worked during the previous year, their economic activity, occupation and industry.
The questionnaire will also cover the class of worker and non economic activity. It will ask whether eligible non workers are seeking or available for employment.
Migration details will form another major part of the population enumeration. Officials will record the person’s birthplace and place of last residence.
They will also ask the reason for migration and the duration of stay at the current location. Permanent residential address will also form part of the enumeration.
In addition, the questionnaire includes information about surviving children and children born alive. These questions apply to specific categories of women.
The Centre has also included the place of Covid 19 vaccination. However, the questionnaire also seeks selected financial and identification details.
Enumerators can collect the total number of bank accounts and a mobile number, if available. They can also record Aadhaar and voter ID numbers.
Passport details will apply to Indian passport holders. The questionnaire will also ask whether a person has a driving licence.
The inclusion of caste marks a major change in Census 2027. It will be the first time since Independence that caste details will form part of the national census.
The 2027 census will also use a fully digital process. Telangana had already started its self enumeration exercise in April 2026.
The population enumeration phase will follow the first phase of house listing and housing census. The decennial census was originally scheduled for 2021 but faced postponement because of the Covid 19 pandemic.
The government has approved Rs 11,718 crore for conducting Census 2027.
