Delhi/Hyderabad, Aug 25 (Maxim News): The Ministry of Defence has given permission to hold talks with Germany for the procurement of six state-of-the-art submarines under the ambitious Project 75 (P-751). The decision was taken after a meeting between the Department of National Security and Defence ministry officials. It is reported that talks with the German company in this regard are likely to begin by the end of this month.
The six new submarines to be procured will have Air independent Propulsion (AIP) systems, which will enable the submarines to remain submerged for at least three weeks. The Ministry of Defence aims to complete negotiations with the German company within 8 months and send contract proposals to the Centre.
AIP technology is the key to the next generation of submarines that the ministry of Defence and Mazagon dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) are planning to build. The submarines will be designed and built indigenously using this technology from a German company.
Experts say that there is a great need for such submarines in view of India’s strategic needs in the Indo-Pacific region. At least ten outdated submarines are likely to be decommissioned from the navy in the next ten years. (Maxim News)
