Delhi/Hyderabad, Aug 8 (Maxim News): The Centre has stepped up efforts to curb the spread of deepfake content on social media and directed Meta to take immediate action against harmful AI-generated material.
The government has raised concerns over the continued circulation of deepfake videos, images and audio even after such content is identified. Officials have also questioned whether social media platforms are adequately fulfilling their responsibilities under Indian laws.
Centre raises concerns over deepfake content on Meta platforms
Recent discussions between Centre officials and Meta representatives focused on deepfakes, child sexual abuse material and fake accounts. The government stressed the need for platforms to act swiftly against misleading, defamatory and malicious content.
Officials are particularly concerned about the misuse of artificial intelligence to create convincing fake videos, images and audio. Such content can be used to mislead users, damage reputations and facilitate online fraud.
The Centre has told Meta that platforms must take effective measures to identify and remove harmful content. It also emphasised that social media companies must comply with India’s legal and regulatory requirements.
The government is currently awaiting a legal opinion on the next course of action. A decision on further measures against Meta is expected after the legal assessment is completed.
The latest move comes amid growing concerns over the misuse of AI-generated content and the challenges faced by authorities in controlling its rapid spread across social media platforms.
