Hyderabad, Oct. 12: The Centre has informed the Supreme Court that it plans to cap trade margins on anti-cancer medicines at 30% of their maximum retail price (MRP). The court has also called for a broader review of medicine pricing across the pharmaceutical sector.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Union government, told a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta that the Centre would notify the list of cancer drugs covered by the proposed cap.
The government said it could periodically update the list to include additional anti-cancer medicines. These updates would depend on market developments and public health considerations.

The development follows repeated questions from the Supreme Court about the significant difference between the prices at which medicines are supplied to retailers and the MRP printed on their packaging.
The court raised concerns about the financial burden on patients and stressed the need for an effective regulatory framework for medicine pricing across the pharmaceutical sector.
