Firing at Chaderghat | Hyderabad, Oct 25: Hyderabad City Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar has clarified the circumstances surrounding the firing incident in Chaderghat, stating that South East DCP Chaitanya opened fire in self-defense after a thief attempted to attack a constable with a knife here on Saturday.
The incident occurred near Victoria Ground while the police team was attempting to apprehend two suspects involved in a cell phone theft.
The Commissioner confirmed that one of the thieves was injured in the firing and that all police personnel, including the DCP, are safe.
According to CP Sajjanar, the events unfolded when two thieves were seen snatching a cell phone and attempting to flee the scene.
A police team led by DCP Chaitanya, who was present in the area with his staff, immediately intervened to apprehend the suspects.

As the officers moved to capture them, the situation escalated dramatically.
The chase and confrontation drew public attention and required a swift police response to prevent the thieves from escaping and to protect citizens.
During the attempt to catch them, one of the thieves suddenly pulled out a knife and tried to attack a constable on the DCP’s team.

Faced with an immediate threat to the life of his subordinate, DCP Chaitanya acted in self-defense and fired two rounds at the assailants.
The Commissioner emphasized that the use of force was a direct response to the violent and dangerous actions of the thief.
He said this was necessary to neutralize the threat and protect the police personnel on duty.
Following the firing, one of the thieves sustained injuries and was immediately transported to a hospital for medical treatment.
CP Sajjanar assured the public that both DCP Chaitanya and the rest of his team were unharmed in the incident.
He added that a thorough investigation has been launched to identify the two thieves and to determine if they are part of a larger gang operating in the area.
The police are working to uncover their network and prevent future crimes. The department has commended the DCP’s timely intervention that prevented a more serious incident.
