- Check dam demolition in Peddapalli raises concerns over sand mining
- Locals demand action after check dam collapses on Gumula Maneru stream
Hyderabad: A newly built check dam in Peddapalli district collapsed overnight, leading to strong public anger and renewed concerns about sand mining in the region. The structure, located on the Gumula Maneru stream in Odela mandal, had been built at a reported cost of Rs. 31 crore. However, locals suspect that unknown persons demolished the check dam for reasons linked to sand extraction in the area.
The incident has created a major stir in the district. Residents who visited the site early in the morning found that the check dam had suffered a complete breach. They immediately raised doubts about the cause, stating that the structure had not shown any earlier signs of damage. Therefore, villagers believe that the collapse was not natural. They claim it was a deliberate act carried out by unidentified persons during the night.
Locals also expressed concern over the large volume of water flowing away due to the sudden breach. They said the loss of stored water would affect farming activities and drinking water availability in nearby villages. Meanwhile, the villagers alleged that the check dam might have been targeted to enable illegal sand mining in the Gumula Maneru stream. According to them, such activities have been reported several times in the past, and the demolition could have been done to ease sand removal.
The villagers demanded that officials identify those responsible for the destruction. They said the demolition of a check dam built with public money must be treated as a serious crime. They also urged authorities to take strict action against the people involved. Later, residents appealed for a detailed investigation into the incident so that the truth behind the collapse can be revealed. The issue continues to generate concern across Odela mandal.
