The India Meteorological Department has also issued orange alerts for Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Theni, Coimbatore and the Nilgiris. Heavy rainfall has been forecast in 26 districts, including Tiruchirappalli, Madurai and Pudukkottai.
Chennai Red Alert | Minister Says School Closures Will Depend on Weather Updates
Heavy rain lashed Chennai and surrounding areas on Saturday, leaving several localities inundated and roads waterlogged. Authorities drained rainwater through stormwater channels and motor pumps.

The northeast monsoon began over Tamil Nadu on October 15. The latest forecast indicates that rainfall is likely to continue, with Chennai facing the possibility of extremely heavy downpours.
Responding to questions about school closures, Rajmohan said the government would assess weather information before making a decision.
“We will decide at the appropriate time whether to declare holidays for schools and how to handle the situation, based on information from the meteorological centre and private weather observers,” he said.
The minister did not announce any holiday or specify when a decision would be made. School closures will depend on further weather updates and the government’s assessment of the situation.
