CJI BR Gavai Calls for Urgent Reforms in Indian Judicial System at NALSAR Convocation
Hyderabad, July 12 (Maxim News): Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai has called for urgent reforms in the Indian judicial system, citing persistent challenges such as delayed trials, prolonged incarceration, and systemic inefficiencies. Speaking at the convocation ceremony of NALSAR University of Law in Hyderabad, the CJI emphasized the need for a radical transformation to ensure timely justice and uphold the rule of law.
“Our judicial system is facing serious challenges. Trials in many cases continue for decades, and in some, individuals are declared innocent only after spending years in prison. This must change,” Justice Gavai said.
Focus on Integrity and Innovation
Addressing graduating students, CJI Gavai urged the next generation of legal professionals to prioritize integrity, accountability, and public service. He encouraged students pursuing higher education abroad to seek scholarships instead of burdening their families financially, and return with knowledge that could benefit India’s legal framework.
“I believe the brightest minds of this country can help solve these systemic issues,” he added, expressing optimism that the younger generation would be instrumental in bringing about meaningful judicial reform.
Need for Timely Justice
Highlighting the prolonged pendency of cases and overcrowding in jails, CJI Gavai stressed that speedy justice is a constitutional right and urged for reforms that reduce delays, improve infrastructure, and ensure fair trials for all.
“Justice delayed is justice denied. We must address the gaps that allow injustice to prevail through procedural delays,” he noted.
Telangana CM and Top Legal Minds Attend
The convocation ceremony also saw the presence of Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, Supreme Court Judge Justice PS Narasimha, and Telangana High Court Chief Justice Sujoy Paul. They joined CJI Gavai in congratulating the graduating class and highlighted the importance of legal education in a democracy.
CM Revanth Reddy praised NALSAR University for producing top legal talent and reiterated his government’s commitment to strengthening the rule of law in Telangana.
