CM Revanth Shocked as BRS Rebels Claim Loyalty Amid Defection Row
Hyderabad, March 20 (Maxim News): The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has filed petitions in the Supreme Court seeking the disqualification of ten MLAs under the Prevention of Defection Act. Party leaders K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) and K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) insist that by-elections are inevitable.
The Supreme Court, which last heard the petition on March 4, had issued notices to the defected MLAs, the Speaker’s office, and the Legislative Assembly Secretariat, directing them to explain by March 25. The Speaker had also remarked that delaying action against the MLAs was not justified.
Defected MLAs Deny Party Switch
Amid the legal battle, the rebel MLAs have now taken a different stance. They are claiming that they have not defected from BRS and are accusing the media of misrepresenting their meetings with Chief Minister Revanth Reddy as party defections.
“If we meet the CM out of courtesy, the media reports that we have switched parties. That is not true. We have never left BRS or joined Congress,” some MLAs have argued.
To support their claims, these MLAs are now filing affidavits in the Supreme Court, stating that they remain loyal to BRS. This move is seen as an attempt to avoid disqualification under the anti-defection law.
Three MLAs Already Filed Affidavits
Reports suggest that at least three MLAs have already submitted affidavits denying defection. Among them is Patancheru MLA Gudem Mahipal Reddy, who, despite being widely believed to have joined Congress, has now stated in his affidavit that he remains with BRS.
“The news that I have joined Congress is false. I have good relations with BRS and met the CM purely on a personal level. I have not switched parties,” Reddy claimed in his affidavit.
Similarly, MLAs from Mahabubnagar and Rangareddy districts have also submitted affidavits with similar claims.
Legal Experts See Weakness in Argument
While some MLAs are attempting to backtrack, legal experts believe that not all can escape disqualification.
For instance, Danam Nagender cannot make the same argument. He not only joined Congress but also contested as an MP from the party. Experts argue that his MLA membership is now at serious risk, as he cannot claim to still be with BRS.
Critics suggest that some MLAs are changing their stance out of fear of losing their assembly seats. With the Supreme Court set to review the affidavits on March 25, all eyes are on how the court will respond to these claims. (Maxim News)
