Congress Challenges BJP Over Hyderabad Old City Voter Claims

Hyderabad, Nov. 5: Congress leader Mohammed Waliullah Sameer accused the BJP of maligning Hyderabad’s Old City through allegations of Rohingya and Bangladeshi voters. He said the latest Special Intensive Revision (SIR) findings had failed to substantiate those claims.

Sameer, Hyderabad Lok Sabha Congress in-charge and former DCC president, was reacting to a clarification by Hyderabad District Election Officer and GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan.

According to Sameer, Karnan confirmed that officials had not detected any illegal immigrants on the electoral rolls across Hyderabad’s 15 Assembly constituencies. He said only around 10 to 12 Nepali nationals were identified in Sanathnagar and removed because they were not Indian citizens.

Congress Questions 9.19 Lakh Voter Exclusions

Sameer questioned Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s November 2 claim that nearly three crore illegal infiltrators had been identified during the nationwide SIR exercise.

He demanded constituency-wise evidence to distinguish foreign nationals from voters who were absent, shifted or untraceable. He said these categories should not be treated as identical.

The Congress leader also raised concerns over the exclusion of 9,19,088 voters from the draft electoral rolls of Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency. The figure represents around 39.46 per cent of its previous electorate of 23.29 lakh.

Yakutpura recorded the highest number of exclusions at 1,54,982. Chandrayangutta followed with 1,48,869, while Malakpet recorded 1,47,799.

Karwan accounted for 1,41,766 exclusions, Bahadurpura 1,21,350, Goshamahal 1,10,148 and Charminar 94,174.

Sameer questioned why such a large number of names were missing when election officials had reportedly found no Rohingya or Bangladeshi voters in Hyderabad district.

He said the figures reinforced Rahul Gandhi’s concerns over alleged vote theft. He called for an independent investigation into the electoral roll revision process.

Sameer also demanded a constituency-wise breakdown of the excluded voters. He urged the Election Commission to review potentially wrongful omissions and restore the names of all eligible voters.

He accused BJP leaders of repeatedly targeting Old City neighbourhoods, including Charminar, Yakutpura, Chandrayangutta and Bahadurpura.

The Congress leader demanded a public apology from BJP leaders for what he described as unsubstantiated allegations. He said electoral roll revisions should protect voters’ rights rather than create political divisions.
