Congress Committed To Empowering Women: Uttam Kumar Reddy
- Minister outlines new schemes to strengthen Self-Help Groups
- Insurance and financial initiatives mark milestone in women’s welfare
Hyderabad, Nov 3 (Maxim News): Telangana Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister Capt. N. Uttam Kumar Reddy reaffirmed the Congress government’s commitment to women-centric governance, highlighting a series of first-of-its-kind welfare schemes designed to make women both financially self-reliant and socially empowered.
Addressing a Mahila Congress workers’ meeting at Yusufguda in the Jubilee Hills constituency as part of the ongoing by-election campaign, Uttam said the government, led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, is implementing a historic roadmap for women’s empowerment.
The minister detailed several initiatives currently being rolled out by the government, such as allocating petrol and diesel bunks as well as solar power generation units to women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs). He stated that these measures reflect the Congress administration’s clear intent to link welfare with economic independence. Uttam further noted that SHGs have also been entrusted with operating Indiramma Canteens and stitching school uniforms for government school students, creating steady income opportunities for women across the state.
Uttam Kumar Reddy criticised the previous BRS government, alleging that SHGs had been systematically neglected for nearly a decade. “The Congress government acted immediately to reverse this. Interest-free loans are now being provided to women’s groups, with the government bearing the interest burden,” he said.
The minister also announced an innovative insurance scheme for SHG members, ensuring that in the event of any member’s accidental death, the loan is automatically covered by insurance while the bereaved family receives ₹10 lakh in compensation.
To further strengthen women’s institutions, Uttam revealed that the government is constructing dedicated SHG buildings in each district at an estimated cost of ₹5 crore. “This is clear proof that women’s welfare is central to the Congress administration,” he added.

Expanding on state welfare measures, he noted that the Jubilee Hills constituency alone had received 40,000 white ration cards since the Congress came to power. The minister said that previous administrations “failed to issue ration cards even to deserving families,” while the Congress government has delivered on promises such as free 6 kg fine rice per person, ₹500 LPG cylinders, and 200 units of free electricity.
Expressing confidence in the party’s performance, Uttam predicted a Congress victory in the upcoming Jubilee Hills by-election. “All surveys clearly show strong public support for Congress, while opposition parties rely on misinformation due to a loss of trust,” he said.
Calling on women to actively support the Congress movement, he urged, “Every woman must become a stakeholder in this historic shift. Victory in Jubilee Hills should be a reflection of the confidence women have in our government.”
The meeting was attended by AICC Telangana in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan, veteran Congress leader V. Hanumantha Rao, MLA Yashaswini Reddy, GHMC Mayor Vijayalakshmi, Corporation Chairperson Bandru Shobharani, Mahila Congress President Sunita Rao, and Jansi Reddy, among others. (Maxim News)
