- Congress atrocities alleged in municipal chairman polls
Hyderabad, Feb 17 (Maxim News): Congress violence in municipal elections triggered a formal complaint by BRS leaders to the State Election Commission. Former ministers Srinivas Goud and Koppula Eshwar, along with BRS leader RS Praveen Kumar, filed the complaint alleging atrocities by Congress leaders and councilors during municipal chairman elections.
They said elections were held in 116 municipalities and 7 corporations. However, they alleged that the process was not smooth. They claimed that money was distributed indiscriminately. They also alleged that attacks took place during the polls. Therefore, they urged the State Election Commission to act.
Speaking on the occasion, they accused Congress leaders of committing attacks during the chairman election. They referred to an incident in Jangaon. They alleged that a woman councilor was dragged by the hand. They further stated that if the outcome was in their favor, announcements were made. Otherwise, they claimed elections were attacked and postponed.
They also mentioned the Ibrahimpatnam election. After the election in Ibrahimpatnam, the court stayed it. Meanwhile, they alleged irregularities linked to that development. They said the Election Commission is a name for its truth. However, they expressed concern over its functioning.
The leaders demanded strict action from the State Election Commission. They said the Congress government is killing democracy. They further alleged that even when there was a hang in 30 municipalities, authorities behaved as they pleased. They accused the police of being used to secure votes in favor of Congress candidates.
Moreover, they expressed concern that the Election Commission has become like a government institution. According to them, the situation undermines democratic norms. Therefore, they insisted that corrective measures are necessary.
The complaint highlights rising political tensions surrounding Congress violence in municipal elections. Meanwhile, the State Election Commission is yet to respond publicly to the allegations. The issue now places focus on the conduct of municipal chairman elections and the demand for strict oversight.
