The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Monday has taken a sensational decision on the panchayat elections. The schedule released by the state election commission two days ago has been cancelled. The court has made it clear that public health was more important than elections and was of the view that elections should not hinder the vaccination process.
It is knew that the government has moved high court after the State Election Commissioner Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar announced the schedule for the Panchayat elections unilateral without reaching consensus with the government.
The Attorney General has argued on behalf of the government for two hours. Simultaneously, explained to the court that the elections would affect the corona vaccination drive. On the other hand, the SEC has reportedly decided to go to the Divisional Bench in the wake of the latest judgment by the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
Earlier, there was a battle between YSRCP government headed by chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and State Election Commissioner Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar over the conduction of elections for local bodies ever since the latter has postponed the elections in the last year. The matter has reached High Court where the court has advised the two parties to discuss the matter and come to the a decision. Despite, government ready to hold talks, SEC has announced the schedule on Friday for the Panchayat elections.
