Heavy rains from Cyclone Montha brought Hyderabad to a grinding halt on Wednesday morning, causing massive traffic jams and crippling movement across the city’s key stretches, including the IT corridor. The downpour disrupted daily routines as commuters were stranded for hours on waterlogged and congested roads.
Traffic bottlenecks were reported from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., leaving thousands stranded in their vehicles. Many office-goers reached their workplaces nearly two hours behind schedule. Public transport services, including buses and metro trains, came under immense strain as crowds swelled across multiple locations. The continuous rain since early morning added to the chaos, creating an arduous commute for students and employees alike.
Metro stations witnessed extraordinary rush from as early as 7 a.m., with congestion continuing well past 11 a.m. Key interchange points such as MGBS, Secunderabad, Nampally, and Begumpet were packed with passengers. Similarly, crucial tech-industry-linked metro stations like Hitec City, Raidurg, Miyapur, and Lingampally reported heavy footfalls, reflecting the paralysis across Hyderabad’s IT and business corridors.
The situation was equally grim on the city’s arterial roads. Major stretches from LB Nagar, Uppal, and Dilsukhnagar through Abids, Koti, Punjagutta, Khairatabad, and Paradise to Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Gachibowli, and Madhapur experienced severe congestion. Long vehicle queues stretched for kilometres, with even short-distance travel taking hours. Areas such as Mehdipatnam, Kukatpally, Madeenaguda, and Nizampet also bore the brunt of relentless rainfall and traffic blockages.
In response, teams from HMWSSB and Hyderabad’s municipal departments moved swiftly to restore normalcy. They initiated clearing operations to remove water stagnation and ease vehicular movement in low-lying and tech zone areas. However, the city continued to grapple with traffic paralysis through the late morning hours, underscoring the scale of disruption Cyclone Montha’s rainfall had caused.
