- Delhi mosque demolition case sees police raids and probe
Hyderabad: The Delhi mosque demolition incident near Faiz-e-Elahi mosque at Turkman Gate has led to the identification of 30 persons accused of stone pelting during the drive. Delhi Police took action after clashes broke out early on Wednesday during the demolition operation, which left five police personnel injured.
According to police, the stone pelting took place during a demolition drive carried out near the century old Faiz-e-Elahi mosque. The operation began on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. It followed a high court order to remove encroachments around the mosque. Ahead of the drive, a crowd gathered at the site. Meanwhile, some persons allegedly hurled stones at police personnel deployed in the area.
Delhi Police released photographs of those allegedly involved on Thursday, a day after the clashes. The images were obtained from CCTV cameras and video footage recorded during the incident. The photographs show masked men present near the mosque area at the time of the violence. Police teams have since started raids to take the identified persons into custody, the media reported.
As tensions rose during the demolition drive, police used tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. Later, they detained five persons in connection with the stone pelting incident on Wednesday. Police also registered a case under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Joint Commissioner of Police, Central Range, Madhur Verma said officials were collecting more evidence using body borne cameras worn by Delhi Police personnel. Police are also reviewing videography captured from the spot.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police Nidhin Valsan said police had used “minimal force” to control the situation. He added that legal action would be taken against all those involved in stone pelting. Security measures remained tight throughout the operation to prevent further violence.
Earlier, the Delhi High Court issued a notice on Tuesday to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and other concerned parties. The notice came in response to a petition filed by the managing committee of Masjid Syed Elahi, which challenged the MCD decision to remove encroachments. Following the court order, authorities deployed 32 bulldozers at the site in the presence of MCD officials.
Police also strengthened security arrangements. They deployed nine additional commissioners of police, 25 assistant commissioners across nine zones, around 800 local police personnel, and 10 companies of paramilitary forces in the area. The Delhi mosque demolition operation therefore remained under heavy security as investigations into the stone pelting continue.
