Delimitation: Stalin Backs Legal Battle, Pinarayi Calls It ‘Sword of Damocles’

Hyderabad, March 22 (Maxim News): In the first Joint Action Committee (JAC) meeting hosted by Tamil Nadu’s ruling DMK on Saturday, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin made it clear that the fight against the Centre’s proposed delimitation of Parliamentary seats may extend to the legal arena as well.

During the meeting, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan likened the delimitation exercise to a “sword of Damocles” hanging over the southern states. He accused the BJP government of pushing forward with the plan without any consultation, stating that the move was driven not by Constitutional principles or democratic imperatives, but by narrow political interests.

Vijayan warned that if delimitation is conducted after the Census, it will lead to an increase in Lok Sabha seats for northern states while reducing the representation of southern states. This shift, he said, would benefit the BJP, which holds greater political influence in the north.

Addressing the gathering, CM Stalin called for the formation of an expert panel to draft both a political and legal action plan. He proposed naming it the “Joint Action Committee for Fair Delimitation” and sought ideas to initiate legal proceedings while also intensifying the political battle.

“We are not against delimitation, but we demand a fair process,” Stalin asserted, emphasizing that continuous action is crucial to safeguarding the rights of southern states. He stressed the need to raise awareness among the public and mount pressure on the Centre, urging all stakeholders to unite in the fight.
