- Rising dog bite cases push IPM and Fever Hospital to full capacity
- Hospitals report thousands of victims and increasing rabies deaths
Hyderabad: Dog bite cases have risen sharply in government hospitals, with victims forming long queues at the IPM in Narayanaguda and the Fever Hospital in Nallakunta. Doctors said that more than 300 dog bite victims now visit government hospitals every day, and the number is even higher in private hospitals. They also said that vaccines are available in all government, urban primary and district hospitals.
Doctors at Fever Hospital said that the number of dog bite victims has increased steadily. They explained that the hospital treats both dog bite cases and rabies patients. In 2023, the hospital treated 27172 people, and 13 people died of rabies. In 2024, the hospital treated 29054 people, and 16 people died. This year, the hospital treated 24705 people, and 34 people died of rabies. The hospital receives 60 to 80 cases every day, and one or two cases every month are related to rabies. They also said that 20000 people receive vaccines every year.
Meanwhile, IPM in Narayanaguda has vaccinated 33765 dog bite victims so far this year. Officials said that IPM receives 2200 to 2600 dog bite victims every month. At the same time, Hayathnagar Hospital treats 400 people every month. Vanasthalipuram Hospital vaccinates 275 to 300 people every month. Medical sources added that Rajendranagar Health Centre vaccinates 90 to 100 people every month, and Hayathnagar vaccinates 300 people every month.
Doctors advised people to give first aid immediately after a dog bite and then go to a doctor for a TT injection. They said that patients will receive antirabies vaccine and rabies immunoglobulin. They warned that rabies is life threatening and requires quick treatment. They also said that people infected with rabies may experience fever, confusion, anxiety, hydrophobia, photophobia and aerophobia.
Doctors added that dogs with rabies drool from both sides of the mouth. They said that people with rabies also drool from both sides and suffer from irritation. They advised people not to apply chili powder or turmeric on wounds and not to self medicate. They said people must wash the wound with detergent and soap and then apply ointment.
