ED Escalates Probe Telangana’s Rs 700 Crore Sheep Scam

In a move akin to filing a First Information Report (FIR), the ED has initiated an enforcement case information report (ECIR) under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
Amidst its investigative maneuvers, the ED has solicited pertinent information from both the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and the Animal Husbandry Department, aiming to unravel the intricate financial web surrounding the purported scam.

Notably, the ED has dispatched a communication to the managing director of the Telangana State Sheep and Goat Development Cooperative Federation Ltd (TSSGDCF), outlining the scope of their inquiry and demanding a comprehensive dossier on the sheep rearing scheme from its inception till present.
The requisition from the ED encompasses a granular breakdown, seeking district-wise particulars concerning beneficiaries, sellers, financial transactions involving bank accounts, disbursements, payments made to transport entities, and expenditures related to procuring sheep feed.

This heightened scrutiny follows the apprehension of key figures in the saga, including G Kalyan Kumar, former OSD to the then animal husbandry minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav, and Sabavath Ramachander, erstwhile MD of TSSGDCF and director of veterinary and animal husbandry.
The ACB’s findings have corroborated widespread malfeasance within the scheme, originally launched by the previous administration in April 2017. With mounting evidence, indications suggest that the scale of corruption may dwarf the previously exposed ₹253 crore fraud documented across seven districts by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).

The CAG’s report underscored egregious anomalies, including preposterous claims of sheep transportation, such as an ambulance purportedly ferrying 84 sheep in a single trip in Khammam, and a two-wheeler allegedly transporting 126 sheep in Sangareddy.
Such incredulous assertions were mirrored across various districts, with vehicles ranging from cars to autos unrealistically listed as transporting implausible quantities of sheep. (Maxim News)
