Hyderabad: Farooq Abdullah event gunfire incident led to the arrest of a suspect during a private function in Jammu on Wednesday evening. The event was attended by National Conference president and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah and Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary.

According to officials, the firing occurred when the two leaders were leaving the venue after attending the function. However, it was not immediately clear whether the suspected firing attempt was aimed at the VVIPs present at the event.

Security personnel at the venue quickly responded to the situation. They overpowered the accused and took him into custody without delay. Authorities later identified the suspect as Kamal Singh Jamwal.

Meanwhile, senior police officials rushed to the spot soon after the incident. They began examining the situation and gathering details related to the firing. Police have also launched an investigation to determine the circumstances and motive behind the incident.

In a brief statement, Jammu and Kashmir Police confirmed the development. The statement said, “An incident of firing was reported at a function where JKNC chief Farooq Abdullah and Deputy CM Surinder Choudhary were present. One person has been arrested. More details are awaited.”

Farooq Abdullah, who is 89 years old, is a senior national political leader. He currently serves as the president of the National Conference. Over the years, he has held several important positions in public life.

Abdullah served as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir on several occasions between 1982 and 2002. Later, he also served as the Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy from 2009 to 2014.

Because of the threat perception assessed by intelligence agencies, Farooq Abdullah is protected by the National Security Guard. Therefore, security arrangements are usually strict during events attended by the senior leader.

Farooq Abdullah also comes from a prominent political family in Jammu and Kashmir. His father, Sheikh Abdullah, was the first elected Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Meanwhile, his son Omar Abdullah currently serves as the Chief Minister.

Police officials have not yet released further details regarding the motive behind the firing. However, authorities confirmed that the suspect remains in custody while the investigation continues.
