Female professor | Kolkata, January 30: A video of a senior female professor ‘marrying’ a student in a classroom at Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology in West Bengal’s Nadia district has gone viral, causing a stir.
The professor called it a psycho drama performance as part of her class, and the university on Wednesday ordered an inquiry into the incident. The officials who sought an explanation from her asked her to go on leave until the investigation is over.

The student in question was also advised to do the same. In this affair between the professor, who was dressed as a bride, and the fresher student, all the rituals like ‘sindoor daan‘ and ‘mala badala‘ (exchange
of garlands) were performed as per Hindu Bengali wedding traditions.
The professor told the varsity authorities that it was a psycho-drama demonstration, which was part of her class, and not real, they said.
In her defence, the professor stated that the event was part of a psycho-drama demonstration used to explain concepts in her class. She claimed that it was not a real wedding but an academic exercise. She also said that the videos were meant for internal use and had been “leaked” without her consent, which she believed was done to tarnish the reputation of the Psychology Department.
MAKAUT’s officiating vice-chancellor Tapas Chakraborty said, “The professor has explained that it was part of a demonstration on her subject. The videos were not for external circulation.”
“She emphasised that there was no impropriety, no immoral conduct and it was purely an academic project. But, in the wake of the controversy and the videos going viral on social media, we have asked her to proceed on leave for the time being, till the committee submits its findings,” he said.
