Hyderabad, Oct 15 (Maxim News): The GHMC Food Safety Wing has launched a special drive of surprise inspections on sweet shops here on Wednesday.

Across GHMC circle areas ahead of the Diwali festival to check quality and hygiene during preparation and sale, as instructed by the Commissioner, GHMC.

The civic body said the effort aims to safeguard public health during peak festive demand. Food Safety Officers inspected 27 sweet shops so far, and the drive will continue in the coming days.

Officials stated that during inspections, notices are being issued wherever violations of the Food Safety & Standards Act, 2006 and the Rules & Regulations, 2011 are found, with adjudication to be filed before the concerned Adjudication Officers in cases of major violations.

They are directing Food Business Operators to maintain hygiene standards in preparation and to keep kitchen premises neat.

GHMC Officials also stressed proper labeling on items kept in display counters, including date of preparation and shelf life.

According to the Food Safety Wing, common violations noticed include failure to carry out pest control operations and failure to test water used for food preparation.

Inspectors also observed broken flooring in tiffin sections and absence of medical records of workers.

Meanwhile, flies infestation was noticed in the display area in some shops, and ovens were found dirty in condition, indicating poor maintenance.

Additionally, officials reported that food handlers were found working without hairnets and gloves, and dustbins were kept open in display areas, risking contamination.

They said these lapses require immediate rectification to meet food safety norms during the festival.

Therefore, GHMC has urged all sweet shop operators to comply with hygiene protocols, ensure accurate labeling, and maintain clean kitchen and service areas. The department said further inspections will continue as part of routine weekly checks and the special festive drive. (Maxim News)
